WHAT: Health-Ade Kombucha (pronounced kom-BOO-cha) is a bubbly probiotic beverage (kinda like that fizzy carbonated sensation of a soda… but without the added sugar and loads of chemical JUNK). Kombucha is filled with heavenly health benefits from improved digestion to detox…and MORE!
WHY: Probiotics are the GOOD bacteria that live in your gut (they’re good because they support immune health by helping to suppress the overgrowth of BAD bacteria), and help regulate digestion, energy and metabolism. Kombucha involves a 7-14 day fermentation process and has 20-30 different classes of probiotics (two or three of them are unique to kombucha alone). There’s also detoxification benefits from this bubbly beverage because of gluconic acid (which is used by your liver to remove metals, alcohol and toxins).
Health-Ade is 100% raw, vegan, gluten-free, makes their kombucha in small batches (to protect the quality of fermentation process and outcome of live probiotic cultures) and always use amber glass bottles (to prevent any harmful leaching of chemicals from plastic… i.e. hormone-disrupting BPA AND amber glasses also provides protection from UV light, which can decrease the probiotic count). Health-Ade Kombucha is made with organic green and black tea, organic raw cane sugar (sugar is necessary for the fermentation process – the good bacteria cultures “eat” the sugar) and filtered water… sounds like a lot but that’s just 3 ingredients!
WHERE: Available for online delivery on Health-Ade Kombucha’s website ($50/case of 12) but also available at many local Farmer’s Markets and health food stores (another reason to love Erewhon Natural Foods Market in Los Angeles).
NOTE: when buying kombucha look out for alcohol content, some brands are only available to those of legal drinking age.
Although we love the Original flavor, it’s hard to resist the other seasonal flavors: Lemon Ginger (based on the name this would be my favorite but with less effervescence “bubbles”, it moves slightly down on my list), Pink Lady Apple (my personal favorite, and the most bubbly), Plum, California Grape, Pomegranate (we keep this one on hand for a healthy cocktail), and Cayenne Cleanse (a nice mix of lime, ginger and touch of spice).
THE VERDICT: I have been a longtime fan of Health-Ade’s Pink Lady Apple kombucha! A few of the flavors taste very similar but this one has the most effervescence (which I LOVE). I like to drink a few large sips first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, but sometimes I’ll enjoy a refreshing sip between meals, as well.
